Taking Time Off

I used to feel guilty taking off from work…

The fear of letting down the team would constantly be on my mind and I couldn’t relax.

It took me years to finally understand that this was a problem and not healthy for myself or the team.

So what did I do?

I learned how to detach.

A leader’s primary goal should be to build the team to a point that they can execute with little to no guidance.

Detaching could be tough for a leader because the ego craves attention and needs to be wanted.

To make it easier to detach, leaders should follow three simple tips prior to taking time off.

#1 Delegate tasks and ensure teams are prepared for your absence.

#2 Setup your out of office with key contacts and don’t check emails. If there is an emergency somebody will call you!

#3 Use the time to gain perspective on both personal goals and organizational direction.

Taking time off as a leader is essential for personal well-being, team dynamics, and overall organizational success.

I always tell my team to not feel bad about taking off.

Why not listen to my own advice?
